Microsoft updates compact Surface Pro and Laptop with Snapdragon X2 Plus processors

Microsoft has introduced second-edition versions of its 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, both transitioning to the Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. Announced at the 2026 Snapdragon Summit, these compact devices retain their previous fanless, lightweight designs while promising notable gains in efficiency and local AI processing capabilities. Both models are scheduled for release on October 13, with preorders currently open.

The updated Surface Pro 12-inch tablet features a 25% brighter 500-nit PixelSense touchscreen and introduces a new Black color option. Microsoft claims the device offers up to 95% faster local AI inference and 60% faster graphics compared to the first-generation model. The tablet also debuts Ink Canvas, a preinstalled, pen-first software experience designed to integrate handwritten notes and sketches with Copilot features. An optional 5G configuration will be available for commercial customers.

The 13-inch Surface Laptop receives similar internal upgrades, including the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip and a 500-nit display that is 25% brighter than its predecessor. The laptop maintains its traditional clamshell form factor with a full-size backlit keyboard and a 3:2 aspect ratio touchscreen. Microsoft rates the new laptop for up to 22.5 hours of local video playback, positioning it as a portable option for users who prioritize keyboard-centric workflows.

Alongside the new PCs, Microsoft unveiled the $79.99 Surface Mouse, which features integrated haptic feedback to provide physical sensations for clicks and interface alignment. The mouse supports Bluetooth 6.0 for multi-device pairing and includes a customizable button for Copilot or other shortcuts. It is constructed with 30% recycled content and will be available in Black and Platinum finishes.

Pricing for the new hardware starts at $1,149.99 for the Surface Pro 12-inch and $1,199.99 for the Surface Laptop 13-inch. While Microsoft highlights performance improvements in Office productivity and battery efficiency, the company notes that these figures are based on preproduction testing. Prospective buyers are encouraged to verify Windows on Arm compatibility for specific essential applications before upgrading.
